SD Crockett

Born in 1969 SD Crockett is a self-taught artist based near Aldeburgh in Suffolk(UK).

She was returned from a seagoing childhood to a Suffolk village school. She grew up around animals and nature and the last of rural traditions and farm life. Nature and the stories and legends of human history have always influenced her creative output.

After studying, SD Crockett worked a stint as an apple picker and garage mechanic in Suffolk, then hitched to East Germany just as the Berlin Wall fell and became the lead singer in a punk band.  Living by hook or by crook, she ended up as a timber buyer.  Joining forces with her adventuring father, the legendary yachtsman turned artist, Mike Crockett, they daringly navigated bandits and mafia in 1990’s post-Soviet Russia.  Returning with a baby, Crockett continued to draw in pen and ink and painted oil portraits of local people.  Painting and drawing were always a part of her life, and, returning to a houseboat in Suffolk, she showed her work in several local shows whilst renovating a ruined Martello Tower at Felixstowe Ferry.  In between carrying bags of cement and exhibiting automata and drawings, she made further forays into Turkey, Armenia and the war-damaged enclave of Nagorno Karabakh searching for gun-stock walnut.  She has published two books with Macmillan.  Painting is her passion and escape and she has sold many of her images of mysterious figures, horses and rural life.
